The Montessori Method affords our school the opportunity to work with a diverse student population - from those academically accelerated - to those with special needs, including autism. At MMSO, students are grouped by sensitive periods as first recognized by Maria Montessori. The periods are; ages 3-6, 6-9, 9-14, and 15-18. Instruction is primarily through small group and individualized lesson plans with an emphasis on research across cultural disciplines. Peer mentoring is a natural component of the MMSO program.

The core curriculum at MMSO includes daily lessons in math, reading, writing, science, and social (cultural) studies. Through small group and individualized lesson plans, classwork is based on ability rather than age or grade level.

Challenging tactile-kinesthetic teaching tools and an enriched, carefully prepared environment, are major components of this powerful and effective teaching method.

The 6 main areas of study are divided as follows:

Foundational: reading, writing, math, geometry, and algebra

Cultural: geography, history, and multi-cultural studies

Science: zoology, biology, botany, earth science, physics, and chemistry

Fine Arts: music and art

Practical Life: social etiquette and peace

Community Service: the preservation of natural resources and the service of others
